Racism in Germany - how bad is it?

发表在 德国论坛

I just read a story on Spiegel online which shocked me: According to a new study, more than 14% of German teenagers can be considered as "anti-foreigners", while more than 5% fall into the category of the righ extreme with Nazi-tendencies.

Surprisingly, the bad reputation of foreigners seems to be higher in those regions with little foreigners (so those regions where people don't even know what they talk about!!!).

The original article is here: http://www.spiegel.de/politik/deutschland/0,1518,613844,00.h
tml

To me - this is just another example of human ignorance, but for a foreigners living in Germany, these numbers are pretty scary!

What are your opinions and personal experiences with the way Germans see foreigners?

germany should have enacted the same equal opportunities for all years before they did and were fined by the EU for not doing so..

    i.e. this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racial_Equality_Directive

"The most advanced countries are Belgium, France and the UK, where new laws have been passed. Other states have complied, although they recognise that there may still be areas requiring further legislation. However, five states - Austria, Germany, Finland, Greece and Luxembourg - have failed to transpose the legislation and are to be referred to the European Court of Justice."

    http://www.eortrial.co.uk/default.aspx?id=1030333

lots more on the web and on the EUs own site.

the rest i leave to you..

its a bit annoying to see the how out of proportion knowledge and conviction are online..

i think germany finally enacted the directive, parts of, a couple of years ago..

IF THE GOVT. ITSELF REFUSES TO ENACT ANTI-RACIST LAW THEN PEOPLE ARE IN THEIR RIGHTS TO NAME IT A RACIST STATE.

Civilized, progressive, modern, democracy my b*tty..!!

oh boy.. i do wish that i was there..
thats what you get for traveling with the great unwashed, the great majority of whom not only had nothing to do with the great germany that they are so proud of but in many cases were part of the group opposing or hindering the advancements when they were first being made.
a great majority of germans have middling IQs at best.. meaning that a good 10-20% at least of non-white foreigners have IQs which are far in advance of theirs..
if she were so great she would be running the country not riding on a tram abusing strangers..
why doesnt the govt. point out to these facts to them
social cohesion and exploitation (of idiots like this woman)
didnt her kind believe in burining witches not too long ago? ironic!!

Things I appreciate that the German culture came up with:

    cheap beer
the language (yes, I love leaning languages)
great public transportation (in Berlin at least)
    cheap beer
    bike friendly city infrastructure
    Bratwurst
    Curryburst
    cheap beer
close proximity to other European cities
    cheap wine
    lots of moms&pops shops
strong support for local businesses (compared to North America)
    cheap beer
    Radler!
    Affordable post secondary education
    etc, etc.

When in Rome, ... sure, but we don't have to become so Germanized. like in any other cultures, there are good aspects in German culture as well. as much as I am disgusted by some Germans, I'm proud to admit I appreciate certain aspects of it. and Germans should be proud of that too.

but, no, I don't appreciate those characteristics of the Germans you mentioned.

You end up mishandled because you do not stand up for yourself..
A man who FEELS that he is their equal will prob. not END up being mishandled to any degree more than some of the local population.
    A lot more conversations/arguments granted..
Constant victimhood isnt as universal as you think.
A black amercian of education, means and character will give as good as he gets.. under all that bravado bullies (germans or otherwise) are cowards

why would anyone appreciate (and/or adopt) a culture which in turns is

    conservative
    command driven
    intolerant
    xenophobic
    dogmatic

if one were for example christian or muslim ones religious principles would not allow it..

p.s. try and answer the question - if you reply at all. ta!

@GN for you to be quicker in the Germanic Language don`t you feel it will be faster to be living in Germany, while attending your classes!.Some people are comparing the U.S with germany, thats wrong !!!! completely out of the question. The U.S has a unique system in place, equal oppurtunity for all men and women regardless of colour.See your self the Justice bench.Quite on like els where. The have the laws in place against discrimination in practice. You should know that some old Germans don`t like the brits because the refused to be over ran with the Leopard Tanks during the last war. Germany bombed all the things standing in Conventary down, then the brits replied with bombing Dressden the famouse cultural centre. So you know why you got that answer from the old man. I know their some few neice people in germany but , everyday it`s geeting smaller.Example was my last Boos at work in germany. She is german but , has studies abroad ,in the U.S and Britain

It's more to do with racial background, facial features, the color of skin, etc., than your clothing or lifestyle. The less you look German, the worse they will treat you. For example, Nordic foreigners encounter a lot less racism than African, Asians, and Muslims.

Whether you have a shaved head, or pink spiky hair, have a car or ride a BMX, pushing a shopping cart picking up empty bottles no matter what you do or have, as long as you have the right kind of skin, you'll be treated with respect in Germany.

If you can't believe what I said, just ask any German punk kids, pedophiles, rapists, Neo nazis, or any criminals if they experience discrimination constantly.

Before start flaming me, here's an article that illuminates my point:

    http://jurabilis.blogspot.com/2005/04/berlin-beussel-kiez.ht
    ml

"Zwei Türken verhindern einen Diebstahl – und haben die halbe Beusselstraße gegen sich.

Dass sie weggeschaut hätten, kann man den Menschen in der Beusselstraße nicht vorwerfen, im Gegenteil, am Ende waren es nach Polizeiangaben 80 Passanten, die sich eingemischt haben– allerdings zugunsten der Straftäter."

Germans can keep claiming it's an isolated incident every time racism becomes evident and it's only the minority of Germans are racists and most of them are nice people. So I wonder where supposedly at least more than 80 Germans were who would be cheering for the 2 Turkish heroes. Apparently it's not worse than UK or US accordingly to the Germans.

All in all, as long as you don't expect to be treated in Germany the way the Americans are treating you, then it'll be ok. And you should draw your own conclusion based on your own experience. It's different for everyone.

global racial hierarchy means that the place that you are looking for doesnt exist..

thats the damage that has been done..

at best you have uk/usa maybe canada..

    thats it!

the funny thing is that the "black" race is so messed up mentally and economically that in seeking a haven you exhibit the same preference for "white" as the "oppressors" do..

    I appreciate your experiences.

I have been to Germany a few times but only as a tourist and everybody has been great. In fact, I thought very highly of Germans before I even visited, and once there I thought they were even nicer than I thought.

I'm sure being a tourist has nothing to do with being an immigrant. A tourist is there to spend money and an immigrant is there to be a part of the whole thing :-)

You are right, the US is great for immigrants. Not only they don't care, they even want you to become an American. I was surprised by that too. Americans saw me as an American even before I saw myself as an American.

I can't just go to Germany for a few months and then come back if I don't like it. I have bills to pay and responsibilities here. And going again on vacation is not going to help much because I'll still be a tourist.

I'm very excited in a way but a bit scared also. I have friends that have lived there and loved it.

Well, for now I'm learning German as fast as I can, but it's hard. I think I would learn a lot about Germany if I could watch German TV and understand it.

But, you say appearances are very important, in what respect? because one thing I love in the US is that nobody cares what you wear, what you drive, how much money you seem to have etc. As long as you are not a pain, you can be who you are no problem.

I hope they don't assume I'm loud because I'm from Spain, though I'll understand if they do because in general, we are. Will just have to prove myself :-)

About the Hispanics and the US, I don't see Spanish being used so much as an advantage at all. I know there is no official language, but I think countries are better off having only one language used in the public sphere, official or not. And in the US it should be English. As I have said many times, I didn't come to the US to speak Spanish. And it bothers me tremendously when people come here and don't learn English because there is so much Spanish around that they don't have to. That is very rude.

I did notice something in Germany though. We were taking pictures of a nice street and an older man that was walking on the street came to us very upset asking us if we were taking a picture of him. We said, no, the street. Then he said, are you English? and we said, no, Spanien, and then he said, Gut and left. I figured he didn't like the Brits much.

    Thanks for your input!!
