Debrecen - small city or bigger town?

I recently visited Debrecen. It was surprising for me to realize that it is second biggest city in Hungary, because for me it was completely different atmosphere - it was like visiting very lovely small town with charming architecture, where nothing ever happens and live passes very slowly :-) what is your opinion on life in Debrecen?
