“Americana, Wide Open Spaces”
May 5 and 12, 2023

Aaron Copland’s ballet, Billy the Kid, displays a simplicity spelled wide. This kind of skillful imagination is a certain trait many American composers have in their music. These composers share an experience of American landscapes within their scores, which is the theme of our concerts - Americana, Wide Open Spaces.

The program includes three pieces from the Billy the Kid ballet, along with three pieces by other American composers - Bruce Broughton, Mark O’Connor and John Keltonic. We hope that listening to these works will bring out visions of our culture and history and the wide open space feel of our country, America. And what a better time in history to get this theme out on the stage!

We perform twice a year, once in the spring and again in the winter during the holiday season. All our concerts are free to the public.

The Westside Community and Youth Orchestra, filled with a mix of adult and youth players, strives to provide high quality performances as an orchestra for our community, while cultivating the artistic growth and excellence of both youth and adult members through enriching orchestral experiences and mentoring among WCYO musicians. Our musical leader is Collin Heade.

We will repeat this concert Friday May 12, at the Liberty High School auditorium, also free.
