Hi, I got my NIE number last January. I didn't realise it was temporary. What do i need to get the permanent one?
Proof of address? Do I need to empadronise first?

very glad someone knows about the N.I.E as there have been rumors that you had to renew this every 3 months, I did not know you could get a temporary one!!

    Hi,

in addtion to Byrony's explanations, the whole process is outlined here: http://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/residence/documents-for
malities/registering-residence/spain/index_en.htm. For even more details, see the link to the Spanish Employment & Social Security Ministry at the bottom.

Oh yes, I know, I've already opened an ING account. Thanks for the tip!

Just FYI: in case you haven't already, you can open a bank account with your passport in La Caixa and ING

Oh, alright. Since I didn't have my contract nor my spanish bank account yet, they gave me a temporary one. Thank you Bryony for solving that question!

    Hi Houssem!
Your NIE number essentially stays with you for life. It sounds like you have a temporary NIE which does run out after 3 months. If you are planning to stay longer in Spain then you make an appointment at the office near you (mine was near Casa del Campo in Madrid) and they issue you with a green NIE card which shows your address in Spain as well as your NIE number. This card lasts for 10 years (I believe). To do this process you need a work contract, and bank statements, I think.

@Paul - what do you mean by residence permit? I think the green card with your NIE on is a residence permit? I don't have a Spanish ID card only my green NIE.

    Legally...

When I went to do my NIE, they told me the NIE was valid for 3 months (even if you renew it, it will still be valid for another 3 months, etc.) while the resident card allows you to stay longer in Spain without having to go through the trouble of renewing it as often as the NIE. Can someone confirm that?
