Discover how students in Capilano University's IDEA School of Design learned about life from residents of the Silver Harbour Seniors' Activity Centre through an innovative graphic design project.

How do you engage students and teach them design and life skills while mitigating social issues like loneliness and generational fear? Sneak attack teaching.

First-year students at the IDEA School of Design aren’t creating craft beer packaging or websites for coffee shops. Their creative training begins by visiting Silver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre on the North Shore, interviewing a senior about the important life lessons they’ve learned, and using graphic design to help share the experience. The students discover and learn to communicate through design one key message their subject learned in life and how they plan to pass it on. The result? A series of award-winning posters and meaningful learning for the students, the seniors and the community.

Dominique Walker is an educator and fine artist living and working on the North Shore of Vancouver. She worked at Identica Branding and Design followed by LightroomFX, where she helped grow major brands, including MMUSA, Walmart USA, McDonalds Canada, Playground resort properties and Four Seasons. She now teaches in CapU’s IDEA School of Design.

Part of the Capilano Universe lecture series, this presentation is free. Registration is not required, but seating is limited.
