The Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. is pleased to present a special online screening of Mal-Mo-E: The Secret Mission (Oct. 18 - 24) in celebration of Hangeul Day, the Oct. 9 Korean national holiday that commemorates the historic invention and proclamation of the Korean alphabet in the 15th century!

Mal-Mo-E: The Secret Mission

In 1941, Korea continues to endure Japanese occupation and an attempt to erase its symbols of national identity such as the Korean langauge itself. Kim Pan-su (Yu Hae-jin), an illiterate petty criminal, gets a job running errands for the Korean Language Society only to find his life transformed by an chance encounter with Ryu Jung-hwan (Yoon Kye-sang), head of the group and the son of privilege. Inspired by Jung-hwan's dedication, Pan-su learns to read and the two begin collaboration on an illicit Korean dictionary that could save the nation-and send them both to prison, or worse.

Director Eom Yu-na's hit 2019 film Mal-Mo-E: The Secret Mission debuted at the top of the Korean box office, earning critical pludits for revisting real events in a familiar historical setting with style and grace.
